We have been boarding guide dogs since 2014. Some dogs have been very short term - just a couple of nights and some have been for their full training period. Early training is normally a 12+ month old dog for about 3-4 months and advanced training is a 15-18 month old dog for 3-4 months. Here is a rogue's gallery of most of them.
Ziggy was the dog that changed our life. We were looking after Wanda when lockdown started but then I was instructed to shield and this meant we could not walk Wanda round Beverley and so she went to another boarder. When my shielding finished we were asked if we could take Ziggy until Guide Dogs could start training dogs again. We were told to treat him as a pet. After having Ziggy for a year we found it heartbreaking to give him back and so we decided to look for our own dog. In November 2021 we were lucky enough to buy Oscar. He is a pedigree Golden Retriever and was born in August 2020. He is absolutely gorgeous and very intelligent.
On 25th April 2022 we had a call asking if we could look after Ziggy for a month as his owner has to be away for a month. We said yes, of cours! Ziggy and Oscar loved each others company and seeing them play in the garden was a joy to watch. The month turned into seven! Ziggy left us in November 2022 and is now a working guide dog - the last photo of him shows him in his working uniform.
Unfortunately the Guide Dogs office Beverley has now closed and the area is now being covered by Sheffield. This means that the routine for boarders has made it impossible for us to continue. It is a very sad truth to reflect that this very enjoyable part of our lives is over. However, we have Oscar......
Most of the pics have been optimized to be viewed on a phone so if you are using a laptop you might find they look better if you make your browser size half screen or smaller.
Last updated - 22nd January 2023. Enjoy looking!
We have also looked after these dogs but have no pictures to show :- Murray, Quita, Alfie, Logie.
